![]() I usually use an external D: which is portable, with the C: being a pure Windows OS. If you really need mobility with Windows, consider Windows-to-Go under Windows Enterprise. Moving clones has much bigger challenges. Using Macrium Reflect, it is possible to clone an entire drive or specific partitions on a drive. A simpler solution is to use Windows Backup/Restore or File History to backup/restore the same hardware. Time machine + macrium image + gptdisk would be too much to keep track of. Id rather keep this as simple as possible. Other great apps like Macrium Reflect are Clonezilla, Duplicati, Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office and AOMEI Backupper. The best Macrium Reflect alternative is Rescuezilla, which is both free and Open Source. You also have to consider licensing implications of Windows, if the underlying hardware is different. There are more than 50 alternatives to Macrium Reflect for a variety of platforms, including Windows, Linux, Mac, Android and iPhone apps. That is the only case I see where partitions would change, and even then, that's why I'll only backup the (C: ) right? So I can move it to wherever I want, as long as I have installed windows through bootcamp so the other tiny partitions are in the right place.Ī clone should be restored to the same sized partition on the same model. Cloning Windows across Mac models has many issues. Reflect does not run in any capacity on Mac OS, and its image file format is proprietary. Typically just capturing an image of a Windows environment that was set up to run on physical hardware and trying to boot it in a VM environment will result in Windows failing to boot, because the Windows environment will be set up to expect (and load drivers for) a completely different set of hardware than will be present (virtually) from the hypervisor. The problem with this method is that it’s a very complex and involved procedure for such a minor tweak hence the NewSID utility. I did send this to Macrium support asking for clarification, but their reply wasn’t very helpful and suggested running SysPrep to change the SID. Applications will need to be re-instatlled on the new Mac. This is presumably why Reflect doesn’t do it. ![]() If you install Windows on the new Mac, are you just planning to restore files? It is better to copy files rather than restore the clone. ![]() You should not restore a Windows image from one Mac model to a different model, due to BC driver differences. Note: If you dont see your target disk, then a driver is missing for your target mass storage interface. Note that if there is no target disk then start the PE command window (icon lower left). ![]() If I replace my macbook for instance, would I be able to restore from my current macrium windows (C: ) image after having reinstalled windows in the new mac via bootcamp? Follow the restore steps, here, noting that you must drag each partition from the backup layout to the target disk. ![]()
